Les Kraut was born in Shelby, Montana and was raised in the desert of Utah. His interest in woodwork began when he was introduced to the fret saw when he was in 8th grade. Through expectations of society and newly developing technology he was led into test engineering delaying his creative interests, leaving him feeling unfulfilled. Finally, in 1990 he began designing half-height grandfather clocks as a hobby.

Through clock design Les gained a sense of permanence and connection to his German heritage in this ever-changing world of technology. Wanting to add embellishment to his designs, he studied inlay and marquetry. He began by learning the British technique using knives to create his "pictures in wood." Finding this technique unsatisfactory to his eye for detail he began researching other techniques which led him to the intricate appearance of French marquetry. After some research, he attended the American School of French Marquetry in San Diego, California. Studying with Patrick Edwards he learned to use the "chevalet" to "paint with wood." Immediately following his time with Patrick he traveled to Santa Barbara to learn the Italian technique with Paul Schürch. Now he is able to blend both styles to create exquisite works.

Les enjoys doing many different designs and doing custom work for those who have a special interest in mind. He thrives on the diversity of the artwork, yet enjoys the routine of the building process. One of his many challenges is the process. Les says that "the process of creation encompases a series of many steps with so many opportunities for failure that when you succeed, you impress yourself." His main inspiration is getting the iridescence of the wood to glow. In fact, one of the finest compliments he receives is "is that painted?"

Les has expressed many times how he gets great pleasure out of working with such unique beauty and creating his own vision of that beauty. Marquetry has fulfilled his lifelong dream to work on his own to allow his creative, artistic ideas to surface.
